Musical Morsels…

“Just another day, living in the hood, just another day around the way…”  Just Another Day by Queen Latifah

So my friends, how goes it? Hope the weekend was a good one for all of you.  It was quite productive and everything continues to simmer with possibilities on my end.  So much to do, I refuse to waste a minute.  It was Hannibal who said, “I love it when a plan comes together.”  Well, I totally agree! ;)

On with Musical Morsels we go!

Y’all MUST know this dude by now! My boy DJ Phaze is the man behind my Anita Baker Sessions mix, that many of you have been reaching out and thanking us for. Not to mention, it is still being downloaded. So happy you like it!  Another Sessions Mix will be coming soon that I am sure you will enjoy! In the mean and in between time, I know this mix will have you grooving and help in starting your Monday the right way.  Download the Break Me Off mix here.

My music fam Damn Good Music Movement in New Jersey has a show for you!  On Tuesday night, they will be making a joyful noise over yonder!  With the likes of the jazzy and crazy talented Kenny Wesley (whom I have talked about here before) and the lovely and funky Maya Azucena. I think it’s quite a balance, from one spectrum to the other.  And Steve Wallace fits right in there. If you’re in Jersey or can make it there, take the show in. Tell ‘em I sent ya. ;)

JJBrownflyer

My peeps over at SOB’s have hip hop coming through on Tuesday night!  J.J. Brown is a producer who is stepping in front of the boards to release his solo album Connect The Dots.  Now I’ve already listened to the album which is set to be released on November 10th and let me tell you, it’s hotness!  It has quite an old school vibe, the lyrics are slick, production is tight and it’s hip hop in it’s original form. In other words, you will need it in your collection STAT.  I am looking forward to seeing J.J. live. And with the list of guests on the bill, it should be a live one indeed.

I mean really, does this man need an introduction?  He will be spitting and twisting phrases at B.B. King’s on Wednesday night. I’ve heard mixed emotions regarding his recent release The Wizard Of Poetry In Emerald City.  I have not listened to it yet, but I do plan to get my hands on it. Some complain and say it is too R&B for Ghost. And some say, it’s the hottest and dopest, just what we needed. Well, either way I know that Ghost will wreck that stage and leave everyone crying for more.  If not, that is a whole other story. I doubt anyone will be leaving the venue without feeling that fuzzy Wu vibe. For more info, click here.

teedra-1

My girl is back y’all!!  Miss Teedra Moses will be working those pipes and shimmying across the stage at SOB’s on Thursday. We know the lady is unstoppable once she’s up there giving her all. Hearing your favs “Backstroke,” “Just Wanna Be Your Girl” and whatever else tickles your fancy, is always a different experience every single time.  And she’s bringing a special guest!  My friends, if you haven’t seen Teedra do her thing live as yet, I really don’t know what to tell you. :D

This is another man who doesn’t need an introduction, especially to the jazz heads out there. The every so debonaire and handsome Najee will be in Harlem with the ladies of ONUTSS.  Najee has always been able to sail along the edge of being soulful and jazzy. Yes, both genres are intertwined but there’s nothing better than when an artist masters walking the fine line.  His new album Mind Over Matter should be a good one. I do have a couple of his albums, so I am looking forward to hearing this one.  And not only are they going to feed you, but your album purchase is covered in the door price. I think that’s a deal and a half if you ask me.

You all know already how I feel about Darien and his amazing debut album If These Walls Could Talk. Guess what Florida, he’s coming your way this weekend!!  On Saturday night, he will be joining a few artists on the open mic session of Whateva’ Works’ grand opening!  Run, don’t walk! I’m sure the venue will be packed with a lot of good vibes being presented to the attendees. Don’t miss out!!  And don’t say I don’t ever share anything with you! LOL

The other night, myself, the BAAS men and Mama Soul of Musical Pathways, were joking about the title of this show. We decided it should be called a night of Comedy Soul, because the two ladies on the bill are not only phenomenal artists – but they are a RIOT!  So be happy to know, this will basically be a two for one deal. Sheer and utter madness and some chunes (yes, I said chunes) to invigorate the soul!  Now, I know how Lorenda from Brown Baby Girl is. The woman is something on and off the mic…lol  I don’t know Alyson Williams, but from what I hear, she is a force to reckon with as well.  So get ready for a soiree y’all.

afrikaa-bambaataa

Now I can’t think of a better way to end the week. Seriously. Celebrating hip hop the RIGHT way.  Wow, has it already been 35 years? *sigh*  The man is an icon. What more do I need to say. It’s like blowing hot air if I continue to go on about how great he is. We already know!! And no words can really capture what Afrika Bambaataa means to hip hop.  And LOOK AT THE LINE UP!  Good god, I think SOB’s is going to jump off of its foundation on Sunday night.  Just saying.

My friends, it was jam packed. No vid today.  Oh and before I forget, here’s the Heston & Laura Izibor review on Soultracks.  Enjoy!

See y’all soon…

Randomness: Men’s Edition – Zo! & Heston…

“I know it could not happen, without your love…” I Want To Thank You by Alicia Myers

Cutting right to it today.

IF by chance you have no idea who this fella in the picture above is, let me introduce you.  Zo! is the brilliant musician and producer behind the whole Zo! Presents… line of albums, as well as Zo! & Tigallo Love The 80’s. He also has a list of collabs with artists ranging from Slum Village to Platinum Pied Pipers and most recently, one of my favs, The Foreign Exchange.  And peoples, I haven’t even listed everything!   Let me tell you while adding to my collection and learning more as I go along, I have not been disappointed one bit. Yesterday was a day soulsters were anticipating, the release of Zo!’s follow up to …Just Visiting, …Just Visiting Too.  Ladies and gents, the album has been on repeat all day long. It is an alluring collection of covers that will not be leaving your cerebral cortex for a MINUTE. And no, I’m not telling you which songs were covered!  Listen and you will find out!  With the likes of Sy Smith, Yahzarah, Carlitta Durand, Phonte and Darien Brockington on the mix – you have absolutely NO idea.  And to make your day, week, month and year, the album is an amazing FREE.99!!  Yes, no joke. The tight ass production, phenomenally orgasmic singing, hard work and passion is all packaged and given to you as a free download.  Here’s Zo! giving thanks for the outpouring of love regarding the album:

And you know I wouldn’t leave you high and dry like that. Click this wonderful little link here and share in the album that will bring nothing but sunshine to your week. ;)

Tonight I headed up to Highline Ballroom to catch the Heston & Laura Izibor show.  Heston opened the show and SHUT IT DOWN.  He told me, “every time I hit NYC, it’s all love…” and best believe he is enjoying every minute of it (and so am I, he gives the BEST hugs in the world!).  Born in Dominica (you know I ALWAYS have to big up my West Indian massive!), he grew up with the sounds and love for Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Bob Marley (to name a few) and each influence is unquestionably heard every single time he indulges us with that mellifluous voice. I will not say too much about tonight, as I will be writing my review on the show tomorrow.  Still, a lot of you are aware that I have spoken about the fellow quite a few times previously.  Take it in confidence when I mention that when Maxwell was away, Heston’s album Storyteller kept me in CHECK and quite happy. The top three tracks on his album that serve it to me right are “No Way No How,” “Sumthing In The Water” and “Brand New U.”  I guarantee, you will fall in love if you have not fallen already.  You can check Heston’s MySpace page here and you can find his bio here on Soultracks.   Here’s a superb vid of “Sumthing In The Water” *sigh*:

You know the deal, I will post the link to the review once it’s up on the respective site.

See y’all soon…
